About Sharon Gourlay
Hi! I am Sharon Gourlay. I began Sacred Beginning because I am passionate about educating and supporting families in the pursuit of gentle & calm birth choices in EVERY birth experience. Pregnant people need to know they have options and choices in birth.
Gentle and calm looks different for every person and can be present in medicated and unmedicated, vaginal or cesarean, blocked or unblocked births. Families just need tools to navigate the birthing world and choices. This is where a birth professional is needed.
I love to share the story of my business and life with people. I live by the motto that "Everything happens for a reason". Read on to find out more.......
I began this journey at the end of another. I worked in corporate America for over 17 years when I met my beloved, Jeff. We were married and pregnant with our first child. My father passed away in January 2004. The grief of his loss coupled with an incompetent cervix caused the premature labor of our son. He was born at 24 weeks and passed away at 26 weeks gestation. This completely changed our lives. While working through the grief of the loss of my son and father, I found hypnosis. It helped me tremendously. My hypnotherapist happened to be a HypnoBirthing Instructor and Reiki Master. In one session I felt some relief of the grief. As I worked with my mentor I found my life's calling, got the courage to try to get pregnant again, and knew I was on my sacred path. I birthed my beautiful daughters. While pregnant with the youngest I trained becoming a Certified HypnoBirthing Instructor, Hypnotherapist, and Reiki Master. Later I trained and became a certified HypnoBirthing Fertility Consultant, Infant Massage Instructor, and became the Regional Representative for our Instructors. Over the past three years, I have attended births and became a Certified DONA Birth Doula. I am also one of the founders of Central Ohio Doulas and am currently the Outreach Coordinator. This body of work I do is in honor of my son Nikolas. I am passionate that gentle and calm birth options should be available for all families.
Jeff and I have been married for fifteen years. We knew pretty quickly that we were meant for one another. We dated for a little over a year before he proposed. Actually, he took me on a hike at Clear Creek Metro Park and totally exhausted me. When he asked I had no choice but to say yes. We married at the Circleville Castle in 2003. We love watching movies and he got me interested in Star Trek/Battlestar Galactica/Babylon 5. He introduced me to one of my favorite movies "The Quiet Man". Every day that I get to walk by his side and be his beloved is such a blessing. He is the best father and we love our crazy life together. Its all about the love and not about the "stuff".
I'm a Mother of two amazing daughters an angel son, and an egg-sized baby.....
I'm a Mother. I love being a Mom. Watching my daughters grow each and every day is such a blessing. Their own connection is so close I am in awe. Even better is that they feel a close connection to their angel brother and my miscarried baby.
The girls totally support the work that I do. So when I miss an event because I am at a birth they understand. They often will say "Go help that Mama and Baby". They love seeing the photos of the babies on Facebook and in the emails we receive.
I think it is important for children to see their parents live their passion. By living my passion my girls are seeing a solid role model reaching for their dreams and being a good citizen. I pray they will be the best that they can be.
My eldest daughter Samantha is 10 years old. She loves reading, swimming, and watching "Call of the Midwife" with me each week. She has leadership abilities and is always looking out for her little sister. If you ask her who her best friend is she will tell you her sister is.
My youngest daughter Isabella is 9 years old. She too loves reading, swimming, and inventing things. She is always figuring out a way to make something with glue, tape, or staples. Bella has a kind spirit most of the time except for when she is tormenting her older sister, then she is doing her job.
If you ask my past clients and peers they will tell you some of my assets are the calm energy I bring to the birth room. I have a solid knowledge of both natural and medicated birth options. That comes from my experience and education. My voice can soothe and lull someone into a safe space. I am an ally to the LBGTQ community. I love to support all different kind of families, of different cultures, races, and circumstances. I am nonjudgemental and love the journey of birth. I have experience supporting various kinds of birth including Hypobirthing and HypnoBabies Births, Vaginal Birth After Cesarean, Cesarean Births, High Risk/Special Circumstance Births, Open Adoptions, Transgender / Lesbian Families, and various cultures. I learn something new from each birth and am always thankful to the families who allow me to participate in their birthing experiences.
When I am not attending a birth, volunteering in the community, or teaching a birth class I enjoy reading, meditating, spirited political debates with my husband, and swimming with my girls. My favorite calming activity is painting a room. The rooms in our house have been painted at least twice if not three times. I have one dog currently named Nibbler. She enjoys curling up with me while I read a book on my kindle.
